Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer was one of the best performers for Manchester United who beat Rangers 2-1 on Thursday night.
Following their abysmal showing against Brighton on the weekend, the Old Trafford faithful could be forgiven if they were hesitant to attend the Europa League clash against the Red Devils’ Scottish foes.
Yet, the loyal fanbase showed up on a cold midweek night, and so did Ruben Amorim’s men who put up a comprehensively improved display, albeit they conceded a later equaliser which forced them to pull off a late late winner to secure the three points.
While Bruno Fernandes stole the limelight with his late heroics, Collyer’s display shouldn’t go unnoticed. The 21-year-old was given a run alongside Christian Erkisken in the double pivot, and managed to produce a ‘tidy’ performance on the ball, as Dave Statman puts it.
The popular X account reveals the stats that highlight an impressive 73-minute outing from the Manchester United academy product. This includes 100% dribbles completed, 94% pass accuracy 66% duels won and two interceptions.

In the current day and age, Man Utd aren’t exactly blessed with a superb midfield unit. Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo have now emerged as the main options in the middle of the park. Nevertheless, their undisputed status is more down to the lack of competition rather than their capabilities.
The Uruguayan has been improving while adjusting to the English game after making the summer move from Paris Saint-Germain, while the Englishman has had his fair share of ups and downs this season.
On the other hand, Casemiro and Eriksen have been reduced to shadows of their former selves. Therefore, Collyer’s timely rise could put him right in the mix for a starting role. The youngster should definitely be ahead of the Brazilian and Dane veterans, but could also push Ugarte, and especially Mainoo for a regular spot, giving the latter a run for his money.
The next few outings will indicate where the new first-teamer stands in Amorim’s pecking order.
