Michael Cooper has been a vitally important player in his first season for Sheffield United as they push on in their quest for promotion.
Arriving from Plymouth Argyle for a reported modest £2 million fee (rising to £4 million if promoted), the 25-year-old goalkeeper has looked excellent in all phases of goalkeeping – shot-stopping, decision-making, commanding his box, and distribution – making the reported fee an absolute bargain.

Cooper’s debut season at Bramall Lane has been nothing short of exceptional. In 43 Championship appearances he has conceded just 33 goals, averaging 0.77 goals conceded per 90 (91st percentile). His impressive performances have seen him keep 21 clean sheets reflecting a clean sheet completion rate of 48.8%. Heading into the Championship play-off final, Cooper boasts an 80% save percentage (96th percentile), and has prevented almost six goals by himself this term.
Beyond statistics, Cooper’s leadership and composure have been pivotal. His performances earned him the club’s Player of the Year award, a testament to his influence on the team’s success.
Reflecting on the season with SUTV, Cooper stated: “It has been a brilliant season since coming in last August, I don’t know what I really expected but some of the performances and results have been brilliant and there is now one final hurdle to overcome.
“I was honestly surprised to be named the club’s Player of the Year, the backing we’ve had has been tremendous, both home and away, so I’m just grateful for their support.”
He added, “Our success so far this season has been earnt, it has come through lots of hard work, lots of planning and small details and most importantly working as a team. We laid a good foundation at the front of the season and from there we’ve built and carried on with trying to achieve our goal.”
As Sheffield United prepare for the Championship play-off final against Sunderland, Cooper is poised for his first appearance at Wembley Stadium. He described the upcoming match as a “massive occasion” and expressed his long-time dream of playing at the national stadium.
“When I’ve watched the finals in previous seasons, I’ve always thought about playing there one day and I honestly can’t wait to step out at Wembley, it is a massive occasion for everyone.
“To be at Wembley in a Championship play-off final is so special, potential is one thing, doing it is another, I’m not one to look too far ahead.”
