The second tier is known for being one of, if not the most unpredictable league in the world, due to the high drama which comes with a compelling 46-game regular season and the subsequent play-off campaign. That was certainly evident in 2024/25 as Sunderland earned promotion at Wembley with effectively the last kick of the season, with Tommy Watson scoring the decisive goal against Sheffield United.

Swapping places with Leeds United, Burnley and the Black Cats are Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton, all of whom gained promotion just 12 months ago, whilst Birmingham City, Wrexham and Charlton Athletic have filled the void left by the relegated trio of Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City.

On many occasions, a successful season for a newly-promoted side is one of consolidation, providing a stable base for future success. However, both Blues and the Red Dragons have continued to generate plenty of hype heading into the new campaign as a result of their American ownership groups, whilst the Addicks are back in the second tier for the first time since 2020.

With that being said, FLW asked ChatGPT to predict how the respective clubs will fare after gaining promotion.

It has already been reported that Birmingham and Wrexham are expected to invest heavily in their current squads, after the West Midlands outfit romped to the third-tier title by smashing the EFL points record (111), whilst Phil Parkinson's side became the first-ever side in English football to achieve three successive promotions.

It has been debated that Chris Davies already has the basis of an established Championship side at his disposal, and that is a key factor behind AI's assessment of their potential fortunes, with big things expected of Jay Stansfield, Christoph Klarer and Tomoki Iwata among others, next term, with the chatbot believing Blues could challenge for the play-offs, finishing in a high mid-table position at worst.

As for Wrexham, the club has already begun to make waves in the transfer market, being linked with the experienced duo of Tom Cairney and Aaron Cresswell, as well as a recent revelation stating the North Wales outfit will have a £25m spending pot ahead of their first season at the level since 1982.

With momentum on the club's side, as well as having strong pulling power due to the ownership duo of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, AI believes a mid-table finish is a strong possibility for the Red Dragons.

Charlton have plenty of experienced players on their books, with the likes of Greg Docherty and Matty Goddon being previous second tier stalwarts for Hull City and Coventry City respectively, whilst Nathan Jones will also be desperate to maintain the services of Thierry Small, who has been as important to the club's success as well as the likes of Tyreece Campbell, Lloyd Jones and Wembley hero, Macaulay Gillesphey.

However, despite ending the season in remarkable form and defeating an in-form Leyton Orient side in North London, AI believes that the play-off victors could face a tricky campaign next time around, predicting the South London side to be involved in the relegation battle.

AI's predictions aren't unrealistic ahead of new Championship season

With Birmingham's financial power and the players currently on the books at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, many are tipping the B9 club to emulate Ipswich Town's previous double-promotion success and end a 15-year exile from the Premier League, with the likes of Kwame Poku already linked with a move to the Second City, as a £30,000 per week contract offer for the winger was exclusively revealed by FLW amid fresh reports of a transfer battle with Sheffield United and Sunderland.

Similarly, not many are tipping Wrexham to struggle next season, although questions have been asked about the continued signing of players reaching the latter stages of their careers, with such policies potentially unsustainable in the long run.

As for Charlton, it is often the case that whoever wins the play-offs is made an immediate favourite for relegation, although none of the previous six teams to earn promotion from League One to the Championship were relegated straight away, and that is a trend Jones, who has played the underdog role before at Luton Town, will hope continues.
