Ange Postecoglou has said Tottenham were ‘nowhere near good enough’ after losing 2-1 to Arsenal in the North London derby.
Spurs’ poor form continued at Arsenal as Postecoglou’s side extended their run to five Premier League games without a win. Heung-min Son’s deflected striker put Spurs ahead at the Emirates, though the South Korean’s effort came against the run of play with Arsenal dominant in the early exchanges.
The home side’s pressure told when Arsenal equalised from a set piece. Declan Rice’s delivery was met by Gabriel, whose header deflected in off Dominic Solanke for an own goal.
Arsenal’s winner arrived four minutes later as Leandro Trossard struck on the stroke of half-time. The Belgian’s low effort deceived Antonin Kinsky to find the far corner.
Postecoglou’s side barely threatened in their bid to get level, though Pedro Porro struck the post late on.
Defeat piles the pressure on Postecoglou, with Spurs closer to the relegation zone than the European places.
“Nowhere near good enough, especially in the first half. We were too passive. We let Arsenal dictate the game. Second half was a little better not nowhere near good enough. Not acceptable,” Postecoglou told TNT Sports.
“Ultimately the responsibility lies with me and how I prepare the players.
“I’m more interested in how we play and we were not anywhere near the levels today.
“Go back to work and prepare for a tough game.
“Of course they [defeats] hurt me. Not acceptable. Too many losses this year. Too many games getting away from us. It needs to stop.
“No other way of looking at it. If you give up now, there’s no point. Right now we have a big game against Everton this weekend. That’s our focus.”
