Teenage attacking midfielder Carboni had seemed to be on a big upward trajectory during the summer.

The Argentine had spent last season on loan at Monza. That was the first experience he had of regular playing time in senior football.

And over the course of the campaign, Carboni had grown into the Brianzoli first team.

There was no doubt that Carboni was ready to take further steps into the senior game.

And unsurprisingly, a host of clubs showed an interest in signing the 19-year-old.

Monza were keen on keeping Carboni for another season, but that never looked likely.

Meanwhile, coach Raffaele Palladino left Monza for Fiorentina. He pushed to bring Carboni to Tuscany with him.

But in the end, it was Marseille who won the race to sign Carboni.

They signed the Argentine on loan with a purchase option, having made him a major target at the request of coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Early on in the season, Carboni did not make too much of an impact at Marseille.

The Inter-owned attacking midfielder was not a regular in the starting eleven for the Ligue 1 club.

Coach De Zerbi confirmed that a bit of a lack of physicality was the reason for this.

However, Carboni did get his chance to start against Angers just before the international break.

There seemed to be signs that this season could be like last one at Monza, with Carboni initially feeling his way into the team and then having an important role.

But this week, Carboni suffered a major shock in the form of an ACL tear.

This injury will leave the 19-year-old on the sidelines for several months. He is unlikely to feature again this season.

And when Carboni does finally come back, time will be on his side. He has yet to even turn twenty.

But the reality is that the Argentine will have to restart from square one.
