Despite having been one of the more important players in the FC Barcelona squad in the last few years, the midfielder Frenkie de Jong has seen his future being subject to speculation throughout this season.
The Dutchman had to miss a significant part of the current season due to an ankle injury that he suffered at the end of the last season. Then, after recovering from this injury, he was unable to play at his best level due to fears of a relapse and found it difficult to get a starting spot as Marc Casado was playing at a very high level.
While his situation in the team has improved significantly in the last few weeks, he is now a more frequent starter for Hansi Flick than Casado, his future still remains subject to speculation.
This appears to be quite the case as TBR Football reports that two Premier League sides, Arsenal and Liverpool, are both interested in signing the €45m-rated Dutchman as they are looking to strengthen their midfield next summer.
Last summer, Liverpool wanted to incorporate the Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi into their squad, but ultimately failed in this operation. Similarly, Arsenal also have their eyes set on the Spanish midfielder, but with Real Madrid another side interested in him, getting the La Reale star will not really be easy for the Gunners.
Thus, both these Premier League sides have Frenkie de Jong as another option in their sights. The report claims that some intermediaries, not only from these two sides but also from Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea, have already made contacts for this purpose.
Barcelona might be open to parting ways with him. Although they see him as an important part of the team going forward, they also want to get rid of his high wages. Thus, the futures of these two La Liga midfielder might be intertwined in the coming few months, and it remains to be seen where Frenkie will be playing next season.
