Arsenal fear Chelsea interest in striker after €75m bid – Blues would need to make a major change

Nicolas Jackson’s moment of madness yesterday, plus the suspension for the final games of the season that results from it, has been a timely reminder for Chelsea fans (as well as those upstairs making the decisions) that the club desperately need another option up top.

The talk has been focused for a while on Liam Delap, whose £30m release clause makes him a tempting target. But Benjamin Sesko has also been mentioned, as has Hugo Ekitike. The focus seems to be on younger players (in line with the strategy we’ve seen pretty comprehensively enacted through the squad), but that does leave out some potentially top options.

Arsenal and Man U focused on older options

These days, when you hear whispers about Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen, our name is never mentioned. Man U and Arsenal seem far more keen on these players in their mid to late 20s than we are.

The latest report from CaughtOffside says that Arsenal have not only submitted an opening offer for Gyokeres, but have also agreed personal terms too.

Their fear is apparently that we’re going to come in and gazump them. They’ve offered €75m, and the Swede has a release clause of £100m.

Chelsea unlikely to change strategy for Gyokeres

If we were them, we wouldn’t be worried. We may we be willing to bend our rules for signing older players when it comes to a unique situation like Virgil Van Dijk on a free transfer. But €75m+ for a forward that’s heading towards 27 seems a step beyond that.

We couldn’t rule it out entirely, but while the likes of Delap and Sesko are still out there on the market, getting into a bidding war with Arsenal for Gyokeres doesn’t seem a likely move at all.
