Kieran Tierney will be making his long-awaited return to Celtic in the summer. He has already agreed a pre-contract with the Hoops. But despite that, the Premier League side did not accept a loan exit for him in the winter. And it is starting to make sense why, with the Scottish international involved in recent weeks.
Tierney was given a start in the game against PSV. He started, not at left-back, but as a winger, a position he has played a decent bit for Arsenal lately.
Arsenal were struggling for options at left-back not too long ago. They had three on the pitch at the same time against PSV. Myles Lewis-Skelly and Oleksandr Zinchenko were also handed starts by Mikel Arteta.
Tierney is an elite player, there is no doubt about that. But he has faced fitness issues at Arsenal, which led to him slipping down the pecking order. He was sent out on loan to Real Sociedad last season and the English club passed on the chance to extend his contract by another twelve months recently, meaning he will become a free agent in the summer. That is what opened the window of opportunity for Celtic.
It is great for Celtic that Tierney is getting some chances to play. It is always good for a player to remain involved.
If Tierney spent his time sitting on the bench, it would have a negative impact on his game. And of course, playing in a different role could help him develop his skills further.
It remains to be seen how often Tierney gets to play for Arsenal between now and the end of the season. As of now, things are going well for him despite the fact that he will leave for Celtic in the summer.
