AS Roma are reportedly on the verge of appointing Gian Piero Gasperini as their manager, according to Sky Sport Italia.
Gasperini has emerged as Roma’s top candidate to replace Claudio Ranieri, who is set to leave despite a successful second half of last season, where he lost just once in the league.
He guided Atalanta to Europa League glory two campaigns ago but has now departed the Bergamo-based outfit after nine years of service.
However, the 67-year-old is set to continue his time in Italy as he prepares to take over a sixth different Italian team, having previously managed Crotone, Genoa, Inter Milan and Palermo.
He transformed Atalanta into a consistent Serie A force and a regular European competitor during his time at the helm, and you would not bet against him replicating the feat at the Stadio Olimpico.
His achievements at the Gewiss Stadium, which include multiple top-four finishes, thrilling Champions League runs and the recent European silverware, make him one of the most respected coaches in Serie A.
Bringing with him a distinct tactical philosophy based on high-intensity pressing and fluid attacking football, Gasperini will be charged with returning Roma to the Champions League.
I Giallorossi only just missed out on fourth place to Juventus last season, and both clubs were also in contention for Gasperini’s signature.
Gasperini’s arrival in Rome will continue a stunning managerial summer in Serie A.
Max Allegri has returned to AC Milan for a second spell, while Antonio Conte came close to ditching Napoli just a few days after leading them to the Scudetto before agreeing to stay.
