As per Voetbal International, AZ Almaar’s director of football Max Huiberts was approached by FC Porto for Peer Koopmeiners (24) just before the transfer window closed. However, attempts to lure the midfielder in as a replacement for the Manchester City-bound Nico González were unsuccessful, much to Huiberts’ delight.
Huiberts told VI Pro: “We are in the fortunate position that we do not have to sell players in the winter to keep the finances in order.
“Clubs for whom that does apply might be more inclined to do business. We think it’s fine this way. We invested in an extended and improved contract for Peer last summer, and we are happy with that.”
Koopmeiners, the younger brother of Juventus’ Teun (26), is contracted to Alkmaar until mid-2028. Speaking of the mutual respect between both player and club, Huiberts concluded:
“For Peer, it is a nice compliment that a club like Porto want to sign him during his first season in the AZ starting line-up. That is what I told him myself. We had a good conversation about it and it all went very well. Peer is happy at AZ and we are happy with Peer.”
