After a dragged-on saga, Alphonso Davies signed a new contract with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, committing his future to the Bundesliga club until 2030.
The 24-year-old Canadian left-back’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season and for a long time it appeared that he would be leaving the Bavarians as a free agent.
While Real Madrid showed the strongest interest in acquiring the defender’s services, Barcelona, too, were keen on him.
After all, the Blaugrana’s current manager, Hansi Flick, was a key figure in Davies’ development at Bayern Munich – something they hoped would give them the edge in potential negotiations.
Nothing came of it in the end, though, with Davies opting to sign a new bumper deal with Bayern Munich.
Speaking to the media after Davies’ contract renewal at Bayern Munich, his agent, Nedal Huoseh, confirmed that they did hold serious talks with Real Madrid about a move.

The Canadian left-back’s representative then asked about whether there was interest from Barcelona and if talks took place between the two parties, to which he replied (h/t AS):
“There was interest from some Spanish clubs, but as you know, we only spoke to a few clubs, maybe three or four.”
Continuing, he added: “Some clubs asked us to keep the negotiations confidential, and I respected that. But in the Premier League, there was interest from two or three clubs, as well as in Spain.
“However, the player’s options were limited: only around five clubs showed genuine interest in signing him.”
While Huoseh might have opted to stay coy on the topic of Barcelona’s interest, it is known that there were meetings held between him and the Blaugrana sporting director Deco.
However, Davies’ wages and bonus demands were always likely to be a major hindrance in the deal going through. In the end, however, the player has opted to continue with Bayern.
