On matchday 17 of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich welcomed relegation-threatened side -TSG Hoffenheim to the Allianz Arena. Having struggled to find the back of the net in a narrow 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach just four days earlier, the record German Champions rediscovered the goal-scoring touch on Wednesday as they tore through the Hoffenheim defense en route to a dazzling 5-0 victory. Courtesy of that victory Bayern re-established a four-point lead at the top of the table over reigning Champions Bayer Leverkusen.

From a game where Bayern pleased their fans by dominating the opposition from start to finish and with the final score, let us look at some of the many takeaways from Wednesday’s impressive five-star display.

Splendid squad rotation by Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany made four changes to the starting XI which started on the weekend against Monchengladbach. In defense, Raphael Guerreiro came in for Konrad Laimer at right-back and Dayot Upamecano, back from suspension, replaced Kim Min-jae centrally. Eric Dier retained his starting spot so that Kim’s sore knee could get some rest. Guerreiro looked like an inside forward when he scored Bayern’s second goal with a touch of finesse, whilst Dier, once again, was solid over 90 minutes.

In midfield, Aleksandar Pavlovic took over from Leon Goretzka to partner Joshua Kimmich in the engine room. Whilst in the attack, Michael Olise made way for Kingsley Coman to start on the left wing with Leroy Sané switching over to the right flank.

With the score already 5-0 inside of 70 minutes some may be critical of Vincent Kompany for not giving 18-year-old Adam Aznou a few minutes at left-back. Apart from this minor blemish, Kompany’s substitutions were wise choices. Mathys Tel replaced Coman to start the second half and within three minutes he set up Sané for Bayern’s fourth goal. Just after the hour mark Goretzka replaced Upamecano and Gnabry came on to give Kane a breather with the score at 4-0. Goretzka was solid in defense and Gnabry scored the fifth goal in the 66th minute. A minute later Olise came on for Sané; Musiala, back from illness, replaced Muller near the end of the game.
