Ben Jacobs shares update on Chelsea’s plan for forgotten €22.6m man | OneFootball

Omari Kellyman is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury but there isn’t a set return date for the teenager yet according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Kellyman arrived at Chelsea this summer for £19m from Aston Villa and was very much a transfer to help comply with profit and sustainability rules, with Villa signing Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

The 19-year-old didn’t go on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America and he’s yet to kick a ball for his new club, with it difficult to see where he gets an opportunity in regards to first team action with the Blues.

Jacobs provides update on Kellyman

Kellyman has made two appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League 2, but is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury which he’s still recovering from.

The former Villa man made six first team appearances under Unai Emery last season and was highly regarded at the club, but it’s difficult to see what Chelsea’s plan for him is.

There were reports suggesting Kellyman could be loaned out in January in order to get regular first team football to help his development but Jacobs has now provided an update on the situation.

He took to X.com and said:

“Omari Kellyman continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. No set return date yet. #CFC don’t want to rush Kellyman back. Idea is to have him ready for November or December, but important he gets back to 100 percent. Timeline should be clearer post-international break.”

Kellyman himself shared an update to his social media showing him in boots with the caption “progress” to highlight that he is getting closer to a return to action.

It seems mad that a player who cost £19m is playing in the Premier League 2, but right now there’s no room for him in the first team squad so unfortunately it’s the only option.

It to early to say, but it certainly feels unlikely that Kellyman will play for the Chelsea first team and his move to the club appears to have been PRS orientated.
