Manchester United have been handed a big boost with Lille midfielder Angel Gomes reluctant to sign a new contract.

The 24-year-old left the Red Devils on a free transfer in 2020 to join the French outfit, and he has since established himself as a key player.

Gomes recently made his England debut under caretaker Lee Carsley and was exceptional in the 2-0 win over Finland at Wembley.

L’Equipe claims that Gomes could be leaning towards a new challenge, having yet to extend his contract with Lille.

His current deal expires in June, and he has shown ‘no signs’ of extending his stay.

Gomes is free to negotiate with overseas clubs from January, and United could be in the race after he opened the door for a reunion.

United could consider Gomes as Eriksen’s replacement

The Red Devils parted ways with Scott McTominay and Sofyan Amrabat this summer. Manuel Ugarte was signed to reinforce midfield.

However, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen possibly leaving next summer, there could be more activity.

Casemiro has shown signs of regression over the past year, and United could cash in on him soon.

Eriksen has impressed with his creativity this season, but there is no indication that the club will extend his contract which expires in June.

United could consider Gomes as a replacement for Eriksen, considering he can operate in attacking, central or defensive midfield positions.

Gomes has welcomed an ‘amazing‘ reunion with the Red Devils, but a transfer could ultimately depend on whether United can meet his wage requirements.

The 24-year-old currently earns only £11,400 per week at Lille. He could demand as much as £100,000 weekly on top of a sizeable signing-on package.
