Having been unexpectedly thrust into the limelight for a Bundesliga side with European ambitions this season, young Luxembourg international Tiago Pereira Cardoso is living his childhood dream. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s new No. 1 – not exactly far removed from childhood at the age of 18 – spoke with club media about his recent professional journey.
Ahead of his 19th birthday on Monday, the youngster still doesn’t know what it feels like to concede a goal in the German top flight. The recent experience of starting his first BMG home match in front of 50,000 plus fans at Borussia Park – in which he kept a clean sheet in a crucial victory over RB Leipzig – leaves him with nothing but positive experiences to report.
“It felt amazing,” Pereira Cardoso noted in his club interview. “It was the first time I really understood what it means when they say a stadium ‘burns’. You really felt the stadium during the last few minutes. The fans were just amazing. It was another world.“
Pereira Cardoso is also slated to start for the Foals away at St. Pauli on Sunday. Given the opponent’s offensive woes, particularly at home, another spotless day between the sticks could be in the cards. The keeper spoke on his eagerness to visit the Millerntor as well.
“I’m really looking forward to the game,” Pereira Cardoso said. “St. Pauli [fighting relegation] means that a lot is still at stake for both teams. I expect a very exciting game.“
