Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has shared his thoughts on Dean Huijsen’s high-profile switch to Real Madrid, confirming that the young defender was always set on the move.
Speaking openly about the summer transfer, Iraola made it clear that the decision was entirely Huijsen’s and that he holds no hard feelings over the exit.
Huijsen, a 20-year-old Spanish centre-back, became the first official signing of the summer for Real Madrid and is expected to be part of Xabi Alonso’s plans for the future.
The club activated his €58 million release clause, agreeing to pay the amount in three instalments. His arrival is seen as a long-term investment as Madrid look to strengthen their defence with young, promising talent.
Speaking in a recent press conference, Iraola explained, “It’s what he wanted. Real Madrid is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he has the talent to succeed.

“It’s not just about football ability, it’s about being mature and confident under pressure. He’ll have a lot of competition, but I believe he can handle it.”
The Bournemouth boss went on to highlight the player’s professionalism, despite the spotlight of a major transfer hanging over him.
“At 20, he has handled everything very well. He’s trained like normal, stayed focused, and shown he wants to finish the season strongly.”
While disappointed to lose such a valuable asset, Iraola expressed pride in Huijsen’s next step. “You never want to lose a player like this, but I’m happy for him.
“This is what he truly wanted, and now we have time to adjust and prepare for the next season. He’s remained natural, just like always.”
Huijsen’s transfer marks a significant moment in his career, and with the full backing of his former coach, he will now begin a new journey under the bright lights of the Santiago Bernabeu.
