John Obi Mikel has been speaking about Chelsea handing out long term contracts and whether he believes it’s good for the club.

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over three years ago players signing seven or eight year contracts has become the norm.

The Blues have been heavily criticised for their long term contracts, but it’s something the club are said to be proud about.

Mikel on Chelsea long term contracts

Chelsea Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have previously spoken about the reasoning behind offering long term deals.

Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson both penned two year extensions to their existing deals last year, keeping them tied down at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

Boehly has previously stated a seven year deal is more like a five year deal as with two years left they will take a decision to extend or sell a player.

In theory it makes sense and should eliminate players running their contracts down and leaving for free or with just a year left.

Mikel has had his say on the matter and feels on the whole it’s a good thing for the club, and pointed out other clubs are starting to follow suit.

“I think the strategy of the club [handing long term contracts], I think now some of the premier league side are starting to adapt that kind of system,” he told Sky Sports News.

“But is it good for us? is it good for Chelsea football club? I think so. Of course, the main man, Cole Palmer now has a long-term contract.

“So, having him at the club for such a long time is going to be good for the project, for where we want to see the club.”

It can’t be a bad thing having players tied down to long term deals and it eliminates being in a situation like Liverpool where three of their best players are out of contract in the summer.
