In November, AS Roma announced that Ranieri would replace Juric after the gamble on the Croat failed. As part of the move, Ranieri will be transitioning into a Senior executive role to help the club’s ownership on all sporting matters. The first task will be to find his successor.
Roma’s season was considered beyond repair before the appointment of Ranieri as they were just standing 20th in the Europa League table and just four points above the relegation zone. However, after a last gasp victory against Athletic Bilbao and a recent rise in form in the Seria A, Roma fans are currently enthusiastic.
No single team in Serie A has won more points than AS Roma since Claudio Ranieri took over—the manager who won the Premier League with underdogs Leicester City in 2016. The only manager who won more points than Ranieri was Luciano Spaletti in the 2016/2017 season. Ranieri’s side currently sits in 7th position in Serie A after a hard-fought victory against Empoli,
Whilst the chances to qualify to the Champions League through the Serie A is out of their hands, according to many bookmakers, Roma are currently the fourth favourites to win the Europa League. Recently, Roma’s most prominent legend, Francesco Totti, was asked who he would like as a new manager. His response was Carlo Ancelotti. With his contract ending in 2026, Ancelotti has shown a desire to stay till the end of the contract. Hence, right now, he looks out of the race, however, there is still a reason to be excited with the below rumoured candidates.
Currently, the favourite amongst Maurizio Sarri is Gasperini. Following his incredible time at Atalanta it’s hard not to see why. His recent Europa League success against then-invincible Bayer Leverkusen was probably the highlight of his career. With rich experience in the Serie A and his eye for talent, he could be a solution to all the problems AS Roma has. Whilst he is the favourite it’s yet to be seen if Atalanta lets him go.
Maurizio Sarri’s last experience was at eternal rivals Lazio before he resigned following a rough spell, including an elimination against AZ in the Europa League. However, he does bring vast experience and a fame for beautiful football. Having won the Europa League with Chelsea and the Serie A with Juventus he is one of the best options out there.
The veteran tactician took this season off after his second stint with Juventus ended last summer. The 57 year-old boasts an impressive tally of nearly 2.00 points per match over his twelve seasons on the bench with the the Bianconeri and Milan. Given Roma’s lack of league titles, fewer coaches would bring more credibility in that respect than Allegri.
These three are the best options, but negotiating them could be challenging. Ranieri and the board could consider some dark horse options and bring someone else, as football often teaches us to expect the unexpected.
The former Ajax and Manchester United manager is currently free, and starting next season, he might start looking for a new club to coach. As he probably had the most challenging job in the world, coaching Manchester United, his results weren’t as bad as people think. After the Red Devils hadn’t won a trophy in years, he won two titles in two seasons. He could be willing to take on a new challenge and AS Roma could go for a manager who has already proved his worth in two countries.
In the last few weeks, another manager who proved his worth has been linked to clubs like Galatasaray. Although he is currently without a club, it is just a matter of time before he returns to the scene. Borussia Dortmund feels his absence, as they have struggled since he left. Their most significant recent success remains reaching the final Champions League they reached.
AS Roma will change its manager in the summer and start rebuilding its squad from scratch. We are yet to see whether they will turn to someone experienced or willing to experiment with young managers hungry to prove themselves on the big stage. The article mentioned some big names and dark horses, but don’t be surprised if a new name in football takes over.
