‘Champions For 22 Minutes’ – Inter Milan Do Their Bit But Come Up Short On Serie A Final Day

Inter Milan got to be “champions for 22 minutes” in Serie A on the final day before Napoli brought their dreams to an end.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter Milan went in to the final day of the Serie A season knowing their fate was not in their own hands.
The Nerazzurri not only needed to beat Como. They were also relying on a result from Cagliari against Napoli.
Considering that the Partenopei had drawn in matches against Parma and Genoa in their previous two outings, that was hardly inconceivable.
Therefore, Inter had reason to dream that they could still finish top of the table.

Inter Milan were on course against Como.
After a back-and-forth start to the match, Stefan de Vrij headed home the Nerazzurri’s opener from a corner.
And at that time, Napoli had yet to break through against Cagliari.
Therefore, Inter were at the top of the table, for at least a little while.
However, just before halftime, news came that Napoli had broken through in their match.
And from there, Inter could do little but hope.
Cagliari never looked like responding, before Romelu Lukaku doubled the Partenopei’s advantage.
For 22 minutes, Inter could really start to believe. But then, reality came crashing down on them.
