Chelsea have beaten Manchester United to the £30 million signing of Liam Delap, with reports suggesting the Europa Conference League winners are close to finalising a deal for the Ipswich Town striker.
Delap is available for £30 million due to a release clause in his contract, triggered by Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League, and Chelsea are said to be in the final stages of negotiations.
Several clubs had expressed interest, with United the most strongly linked, but the chance to join a side playing Champions League football next season seems to have tipped the scales in Chelsea’s favour, despite United’s long-standing pursuit.
While Ipswich endured a difficult season that ended in relegation, Delap impressed with a breakthrough campaign, scoring 12 Premier League goals.
Prior to that, he spent the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons on loan in the Championship with Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City, where he netted 12 goals in 70 appearances.
