Chelsea would have to pay a significant fee if they choose to back out of their obligation to sign Jadon Sancho permanently this summer, a report has revealed.
When Sancho joined Chelsea on loan last summer, it was assumed his time with Manchester United was over as the Blues agreed to an obligation to sign the winger at the end of the season if they finish higher than 14th in the Premier League standings for a fee of around £25m.
However, earlier this month, it emerged Chelsea do have the option to buy their way out of the agreement and reports have claimed the Blues are considering doing so, having been underwhelmed by his performances this season.
After a hot start to life in London, Sancho sits on just two goals and six assists in 28 games for Chelsea - form which the 24-year-old admitted has "annoyed" him.
According to ESPN, Chelsea would have to pay a "large proportion" of the pre-agreed £25m fee if they choose to back out of their obligation to sign Sancho permanently.
Chelsea are already preparing for significant attacking reinforcements. Brazilian sensation Estevao Willian will move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, while Sporting CP's Geovany Quenda has already agreed a £44.7m switch in 2026.

Just whether Chelsea will choose to walk away from Sancho remains unclear, but a potential return to United would create another significant issue for the Red Devils on their bid to cut costs and trim Ruben Amorim's squad.
Amorim is expected to be given the final decision on Sancho's future if he does return to Old Trafford, with the Manchester Evening News adding that three possible options are under consideration.
United could welcome Sancho back into Amorim's squad if the head coach indicates an interest in doing so, of they could explore another departure. While a permanent sale would be preferred, United recognise another loan may be likely due to Sancho's uninspiring form this season.
However, in the long run, a decision must be made on Sancho's contract, which expires in 2026. As one of the highest earners in the squad, he could be allowed to run his deal down and leave on a free transfer, but United are said to be considering triggering a 12-month extension clause to try aid their chances of sealing a permanent sale.
