Two days away from their presentation in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Guadalajara is already in the Dominican Republic, where they will visit Cibao this Thursday for the first leg of the first round. It is well known throughout the Rojiblanca Nation that this will not be the first time that the Rebaño and the Dominicans will meet, so today we will remember what happened almost 7 years ago.
Curiously, the 2018 Concachampions also pitted Guadalajara and Cibao against each other in February. However, on that occasion, the first leg took place on February 22, while the final match was played on February 28.
What happened in that qualifying round?
Chivas traveled to the Dominican Republic with the intention of gaining a good advantage, which they did. The first leg ended with a score of 0-2, thanks to goals by Jesús Sánchez at 39' and José Juan Macías at 93'. As a curious fact, Alan Pulido was a starter and played the entire match that night in Santiago de los Caballeros.
The second leg was totally different, from the lineup to the stance of both teams, and as expected, Cibao was much more aggressive playing at home. However, after coming out with a disadvantage in the first leg, the Caribbean team opened up spaces that Guadalajara took advantage of quite well. The final score was 5-0, with goals scored by Oswaldo Alanís, Carlos Cisneros, José Juan Macías, Alan Pulido and Alejandro Mayorga.
Thus, with an aggregate score of 7-0, Guadalajara overcame Cibao and advanced to the next round in that competition of which they would become champions months later. This Thursday, a new chapter in the rivalry will begin, so the Rebaño will seek to replicate what was done in February 2018 and advance to the next round.
