City’s Wembley record under Pep Guardiola

Saturday’s FA Cup final will be City’s 21st trip to Wembley under Pep Guardiola when the national stadium has been a neutral venue.
With the Catalan approaching the end of his ninth campaign as our boss, that means he averages more than two trips to the home of football every season.
We are comfortably Wembley’s most regular visitors since Guardiola landed on these shores in 2016, with Chelsea having made the journey 16 times in that same time period.
When you consider the eight matches at the ‘new’ Wembley between 2011 and the summer of 2016 too, it’s little wonder City fans have affectionately termed it the ‘Etihad South’.
Guardiola already had a love affair with the historic site of course, having won the European Cup there as a player and a manager of Barcelona in 1992 and 2011 respectively.
He’s strengthened that with nine trophies lifted at the top of Wembley’s famous steps as City boss, comprising of four League Cups, three Community Shields and two FA Cups.
Victory on Saturday would see him become just the second manager to win both domestic cup at least three times, with only Sir Alex Ferguson doing so previously.
10 of our 20 visits under Guardiola have been won in 90 minutes, with a further three coming in penalty shootouts.
Six defeats have occurred in the normal course of the match, while we’ve lost just one penalty shootout.
Saturday will be our third successive FA Cup final meaning that after the run of four straight League Cup victories between 2018 and 2021, we are the first club ever to play the finals of the two major domestic cups three years running.
Our first Wembley match under Guardiola was an FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal late in his first term.
The 2017/18 double-winning season saw us play once at the national stadium, with an emphatic 3-0 defeat of the Gunners in the League Cup final.
Four visits followed as we claimed a clean sweep of domestic trophies in 2018/19, with victories over Chelsea in the Community Shield and the League Cup final before defeating Brighton and Watford to win the FA Cup.
After beating Aston Villa in March 2020, we returned for a 2-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat behind closed doors later that year.
Another FA Cup semi-final loss came in April 2021 but was swiftly followed by a narrow win in the League Cup final.
We lost both games at Wembley in 2021/22, with Leicester winning the Community Shield and Liverpool victorious in the FA Cup last four.
Wins against Sheffield United and Manchester United in 2022/23 took us to FA Cup glory as part of our historic Treble.
Three trips came in 2023/24, but ultimately we were unsuccessful in both the Community Shield and FA Cup final either side of the semi-final win over Chelsea.
Saturday’s FA Cup final will be our third visit of the 2024/25 season, after wins in the Community Shield and FA Cup semi.
