The Premier League have confirmed the match officials to oversee proceedings between Manchester City and Newcastle United this weekend.
Pep Guardiola and his players will be desperate to get back to winning ways as they continue to contend with an extended period of performance uncertainty having followed up a comeback win in the FA Cup with a comeback defeat in the UEFA Champions League.
Erling Haaland’s brace had City 2-1 ahead heading into the final exchanges of Tuesday night’s affair, but lapses of concentration at the back and poor decision making saw Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham claim a 2-3 away win for Real Madrid in the last-16 play-off first-leg tie.
Manchester City know that this weekend is as important as their other high-profile fixtures in the coming weeks, taking on a side who also have their eyes on a top-four finish this season to secure European football for the following campaign.
But City’s available list of personnel has not got any better either this week, with Manuel Akanji ruled out until April with an abductor injury, while there is also fitness uncertainty around Nico Gonzalez and Jack Grealish.
Ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Newcastle United, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!
The Premier League have confirmed this week that referee Andy Madley has been appointed into the role of lead on-field match official for the game between Manchester City and Newcastle United this weekend.
The 41-year-old has overseen a total of 17 matches so far this season across the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and EFL Championship, issuing 67 yellow cards, two second yellow dismissals, one straight red card, and awarding three penalties.
Madley has officiated a total of 12 Manchester City matches across his career to date, with the Etihad Stadium club emerging as winners on eight of those occasions, recording two draws and two defeats, too.
However, Manchester City have not seen any of their matches officiated by Andy Madley since last season’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United at Wembley Stadium – a game that saw just the one yellow card handed out.
The last Premier League encounter involving City that had Madley as the match referee was also against Manchester United, as Pep Guardiola’s side inflicted a 3-1 defeat on Erik ten Hag’s squad in March 2024.
Accompanying Andy Madley out on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium this weekend for Manchester City against Newcastle United will be an assistant referee pairing of Nick Hopton and Craig Taylor.
As for the duo monitoring proceedings from the VAR Hub at Stockley Park on Saturday afternoon, the Premier League have confirmed that John Brooks will be in the Video Assistant Referee role, while Lee Betts will take up the position of Assistant Video Assistant Referee.
Standing between the two dugouts and ensuring that behaviour is kept in check between Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will be referee Tim Robinson, taking up the position of fourth official.
