Newcastle United defender Dan Burn is on the verge of extending his current contract, according to the Daily Mail.

Burn, a boyhood Newcastle fan, has made 148 appearances for the club since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion back in January 2022.

The defender has been a mainstay for Eddie Howe’s side once again this term, with 45 outings across all competitions under his belt, including the memorable EFL Cup final back in March.

Burn grabbed the crucial opening goal for Newcastle as they downed Premier League champions Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley for their first piece of silverware in 56 years.

That was undeniably the highlight of Burn’s career so far but his maiden England appearance against Albania  also ranks up there in what has been a splendid individual campaign for the 33-year-old.

With his existing deal due to expire next year, it is no surprise Newcastle have moved fast to tie down one of their most trusted lieutenants, who has also expressed a desire to finish his career on Tyneside.

“I’d love to finish my career here,” Burn told iNews back in October.

“I’ve moved back home now, my kids are back with their family, we get to see our family a lot and it was always the plan to finish my career here.”

Burn’s impending contract extension should usher in a flurry of transfer activity at St James’ Park with Newcastle expected to be fairly active this summer.

Sitting in fourth position with 66 points from 37 games, the Magpies are currently embroiled in a five-team battle for three UCL spots heading into the final matchday.

However, Newcastle will head out this weekend in their season finale against Everton knowing they have their destiny in their hands, as a win would guarantee them participation in Europe’s premier club competition next season.
