Quite literally the last thing Ruben Amorim needs to hear upon the culmination of a lacklustre transfer window is that he’s set to be without one of his integral players for the rest of the season.
That, unfortunately, looks to be the case, as Argentine football expert Gaston Edul revealed on social media this afternoon that Lisandro Martinez has torn his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee – hence ruling him out for the foreseeable future.
It comes after the centre-half was carried off the pitch on a stretcher in the closing stages of yesterday’s loss to Crystal Palace, looking inconsolable as he did so. He had dropped to the floor after sustaining a non-contact injury, leading fans to quickly assume the worst.
Even amidst United’s dismal form this term, Martinez looked to be back to his best, and it certainly took him some time to following a year of unrelenting fitness setbacks.

Indeed, the 27-year-old was limited to just 14 appearances in all competitions across the entirety of 2023/2024; he initially sustained a re-aggravation of the metatarsal fracture that ended his maiden United season prematurely before proceeding to suffer a knee complaint and calf strain.
Amorim will now be relying on Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro to fill the void of their sidelined counterpart. Victor Lindelof has just returned to the fold in the last three matches – albeit as an unused substitute – while Jonny Evans is unavailable.
David de Gea sent a message to his former teammate this evening on social media, sharing snaps of himself and Martinez along with the caption: “As always, you do things… like a warrior.”
