Mattia De Sciglio has admitted that facing AC Milan reminds him of where he ‘home’ his, after his Empoli side were beaten 2-0 last night.

De Sciglio was born in Milan and joined the youth system when he was 10 years of age in 2002, eventually making the jump to the first team in the 2011-12 season under the then-coach Max Allegri.

He made his senior debut that season and would go on to make over 100 appearances for the club across seven seasons, eventually leaving for Juventus in 2017.

The full-back has been with Juve ever since barring a loan spell with Lyon in 2020-21 and then this season he was sent to Empoli for the year.

De Sciglio spoke at a press conference after the Azzurri’s defeat against the Rossoneri which came after goals from Rafael Leao and Santiago Gimenez, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

What was it like to face Milan?

“AC Milan is the home where I grew up since I was a child, the team that made me become a player. I spent 16 years of my life in AC Milan and every time I see the AC Milan crest it is a huge emotion.”

How do you feel the game went?

“We can’t complain about anything in terms of performance and attitude on the pitch. We put the Rossoneri in difficulty, then it’s clear that teams like Mister Conceicao’s have players who can change a match with just one play.”

What are the aims for the rest of the season?

“We must continue to work and maintain the same attitude, trying to limit carelessness, concessions and errors as much as possible. These small episodes are what lead us to not collect what we deserve on the pitch.”

Empoli have a young average age…

“We have to manage the fact that we are a young team in the second part of the season. At the moment we are struggling to get points, but we have to keep our morale high and continue to work with positivity.”
