The amount of money invested by Bundesliga club Hoffenheim in new players this season was among one of the major talking points following Saturday’s humiliating 4-0 defeat against Union Berlin. Quite literally, the Sinsheimers have found themselves incapable of buying success. Massive spending splurges at the end of the summer and winter transfer windows have yielded next to nothing.

Two new January signings (Bazoumana Touré and Leo Østigaard) officially became the 33rd and 34th players fielded by Hoffenheim thus far this season. Østigaaard – while actually decent at times – started in a back-four utterly incapable of defending on the counter. Highly controversial summer signing Arthur Chaves, purchased for €6m from the Portuguese second division, had another disappointing day at the back.

German TSG outfielders Dennis Geiger and Marius Bülter expressed their frustration with the latest performances while speaking to Sky Germany after the full-time whistle. Geiger took it upon himself to roughly estimate how much the club had spent in the last two windows. Depending on which sources one uses, the former Germany U21 international may have overestimated TSG’s outlay by €15m-20m.

“We spend €90m,” Geiger groused. “And what are we, fourth from last [in the table]? That speaks for itself. Of course, that doesn’t meet expectations. Today, things just keep getting worse and worse. It’s going to be really hard after a performance like today.”

“It’s embarrassing and well-deserved,” Bülter added. “In the end, we gave up. There was no resistance at all. We won’t win any games with the way we played today. We’ll only end up getting relegated.”
