Douglas Luiz got the nod in the third straight Champions League fixture versus PSV and played the entire game. His name had popped up in the rumor mill in January, linking him especially to a return to the Premier League, but he never seemed particularly close to leaving.
He spoke to Sky after the 2-1 win in the playoff (via SOSFanta).
“The result is the most important thing for us. We knew we were facing a young team that runs a lot. We must continue like this and explouit our one-goal lead. In the second leg, we’ll need to be hungry for victory.”
Douglas Luiz commented on his performance.
“It was difficult, as I hadn’t gone 90 minutes in a long time, but I think I provided my contribution. I struggled at first, but I’m happy to be here and want to take advantage of this moment and keep playing.”
The midfielder didn’t shy away from his difficulties so far.
“I’ve found a different type of football here. I know that Serie A is as challenging as the Premier League, but other factors affected my adaptation as well. I’m happy with the club, the coach, and my teammates. I want to continue here and give my best.”
It has taken a long time, but their design for the midfield is finally coming together. A couple of contributors are still subpar, but they can alternate quality players now, and having depth is always a good thing. Shipping him off in January already would have felt rushed, plus it was arduous to find the right deal to avoid a loss.
