Mary Earps’ sudden and immediate retirement from international football rocked the women’s football world following her announcement on social media.

The country has since speculated about the reasoning behind this decision. Was it truly about the next generation, or was Earps told she was no longer England’s number one five weeks ahead of the Euros?

These are just rumours. On Monday, she arrived at St George’s Park to announce her decision to the rest of the England team ahead of their UEFA Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain.

Jess Carter, a focal point in England’s defence over the last few years, was surprised and sad to hear that Earps was calling time on her international career.

In a recent press conference for the Lionesses, Carter said: “I think Mary is an incredible person, an incredible goalkeeper. I don’t know many people who have worked as hard as she has.”

The Gotham FC defender also discussed Earps’ impact both on and off the pitch, amid speculation over the goalkeeper’s decision and some questions surrounding her approach.

“Playing for England meant so much to her. You could see it every time she put the top on. So I think she’s made some incredible achievements on and off the pitch. I think people maybe forget that what she’s done for the women’s game off the pitch is phenomenal, particularly the goalkeepers. I think the way she’s helped raise women’s football in this country is unbelievable.”

While England manager Sarina Wiegman did not attend the recent media day at St George’s Park, a statement was released including her response to Earps’ news.

“I had hoped that Mary would play an important role within the squad this summer. So of course I am disappointed.”

Inspiring future Lionesses

Michelle Agyemang got her first senior England call-up in April. The Arsenal striker reflected on her first time meeting Earps and how her decision to retire has impacted the squad.

“I met her for the first time then and described her as an amazing person and player. Especially for what she has done for the game and goalkeepers. Obviously, we’re a bit disappointed, but she’s had such a great leacy in England. So we’re really happy with what she’s done for us.

“I think she’s so confident and you need that as a keeper. Especially which helps her drive the team both on and off the pitch. She was invaluable to me when I came in. She never met me before, but she was really welcoming, which shows the type of person she is and reflects on the pitch as well.”
