In an interview with BBC Sport, RC Strasbourg head coach Liam Rosenior was asked about his unorthodox move to France and the difficulty younger British coaches have at being able to access opportunities at the top level of the English game in the Premier League.

After being sacked by Hull City, despite finishing narrowly outside the play-offs in the EFL Championship, Rosenior made the move to France. BlueCo, the owners of Chelsea and the Racing club, sounded out the interest of the former Derby coach over a potential move to Ligue 1. The London-born coach has impressed since he arrived at Strasbourg and has relished the chance to coach in a top division with the Alsatian outfit currently 7th in Ligue 1.

‘A lack of opportunities’

Only three British managers currently coach in the English top flight – a much lower number than seen in other top divisions across Europe. Quizzed on why that is, Rosenior said, “If you look at Germany, Portugal, or even Spain, Italy and France, their younger coaches are exposed to the top level, to the top league earlier, than English coaches are. That’s because of the strength, financial and corporate power of the Premier League.”
