Chelsea are without their two main strikers, and all the talk leading up to tonight’s game has been on how Enzo Maresca is going to help a team that was already struggling to score cope with their loss.

In his article for the Daily Mail, Kieran Gill pointed out that it’s the wingers who are going to have to chip in, and noted the tactical decisions Maresca has made which have restricted them so far:

“Now is the time for others to step up at Chelsea, not least those who are supposed to be contributing from the wings. It is not the easiest task for Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho and Co, with Maresca so averse to high and wide full backs that Ben Chilwell was blacklisted. He prefers them inverting into midfield, and that can leave his winger with more than one opponent to beat on his own.”

Madueke working on his own to improve goal output

Interestingly, he also noted that one winger in particular has been doing individual work to improve his output:

“[The wingers] are working on improving their output, not only inside of Cobham but outside. For example, Noni Madueke has been training with an external skills coach in a bid to boost his consistency, repeating drills which involve the left-footer driving in from the right-hand side.”

We’ve actually seen these sorts of drills in action on Noni’s Instagram page. It all looks very impressive when there’s no defender and no keeper, what we want to start seeing is evidence of it in matches. There were some textbook examples earlier in the season, and it looked like this extra help might have helped him crack the code to be a regular scorer, but like the rest of the team’s attacking fluency, it’s dried up since Christmas and now desperately need to return.
