Joe Jacobson reflected on his past experiences after Sheffield Wednesday failed to pay their players on time for March.
Joe Jacobson believes some Sheffield Wednesday players may be reflecting on their futures after the club failed to pay the wages for March on time.
It was announced on Monday night by the Owls that the salaries for March wouldn’t be paid on time, with the club claiming the ‘immediate cashflow’ had been impacted due to owner Dejphon Chansiri not receiving funds from other businesses.
Naturally, that concerned the fans, who have grown increasingly frustrated at the way the club has been run under Chansiri over the past few years.
Of course, it will also be the talk of the dressing room, and speaking exclusively to Football League World, ex-Wycombe skipper Jacobson and now EFL pundit reflected on his own experience of this happening, as he also claimed players will be prepared to take things to the next level if they aren’t given suitable assurances payment will arrive swiftly.
“It’s happened to me once or twice in my career, where you haven’t been paid on time.
“It all depends on the assurances from the club and the communication the club provides to the players and staff, and if there’s a worry over it.
Sheffield Wednesday owner Dajphon Chansiri has caused quite a stir with the club over ticket prices
“Chansiri has done some strange things in the past to try and raise money from fans, and he’s a very wealthy man, so you kind of wonder if his position if all of a sudden for one month he can’t pay the amount that’s needed to fulfil the salary.
“From the players point of view, if they’re worried it may happen again, or if there are murmurings that things aren’t going to change very quickly, then they may start to worry a little bit.
“I also think their position in the league, where they’re not going to get into the play-offs, they’re safe from relegation, in that mid-table bit. It’s how their mentality is for the final seven games. Are they going to be up for it and fighting for each other? Or are they starting to think that if this is the situation of the football club, do I want to stay here? Should I start looking at other teams and having those conversations now, which could see you take your eye off the ball a little bit.
“So, it’s a strange time, and hopefully it gets sorted out quickly, and if that payment comes in the next day or two, it’s fine. But if it drags on anything longer, players start thinking about getting the PFA involved and speaking to their agents a bit more, and all of a sudden you’re thinking do I want to risk anything for this club if they’re not going to pay me in the future?”
This is another concerning update for Sheffield Wednesday fans, and it’s not the first time they’ve had financial issues with Chansiri.
Jacobson has provided an interesting insight from the perspective of a player, and, that’s how most would feel in their job if they weren’t getting paid - it’s normal to have concerns and worries.
So, Chansiri needs to offer a better explanation than the club statement that tried to pass the blame onto other businesses, and it's a shame that another off-field problem has arisen when Danny Rohl and the side are having a good campaign on the pitch.
Ultimately, further developments should come in the coming days, and all connected to the club will hope it’s resolved, as otherwise there will be more speculation and talk about the players and staff at Hillsborough.
