Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool Told £150m Target is Off Limits by Premier League Rival

As the summer transfer window gathers pace, Liverpool have found their initial inquiries into Newcastle’s star forward Alexander Isak firmly rebuffed. Fabrizio Romano, the authoritative voice on transfers, revealed on his YouTube channel that Liverpool’s early interest faced immediate resistance.
“The message coming from Newcastle is very clear, especially in case of Champions League football. The very clear idea of the owners, the management, all the people at the club, is that Alexander Isak will be part of Newcastle’s squad next season,” Romano stated emphatically.
Given Newcastle’s impending Champions League qualification, their stance is entirely understandable. The 25-year-old Swede has been prolific this term, bagging 27 goals in all competitions. His Premier League tally of 23 trails only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, underscoring why the Magpies are determined to retain their prized asset.
While Romano acknowledged Liverpool’s contacts regarding Isak back in April and May, Newcastle’s valuation of around £150 million, as reported by Luke Edwards, effectively shuts the door on any realistic move.
“Same for Arsenal, he’s always been the number one desire for Mikel Arteta but they understand that it’s probably not going to be possible this summer unless they do something completely crazy in terms of transfer fee and offer to the player,” Romano added.
With Liverpool heavily linked to a substantial bid for German wonderkid Florian Wirtz, financial realities mean a blockbuster move for Isak seems improbable. The Reds are renowned for prudent financial management under Fenway Sports Group, making a simultaneous nine-figure double swoop highly unlikely.
Liverpool’s interest in a forward may hinge significantly on the future of Darwin Núñez. Should the Uruguayan depart, finding a quality replacement without breaking the bank becomes essential. Benjamin Šeško emerges as a compelling alternative. Following RB Leipzig’s missed European qualification, the Slovenian could become available at a fraction of Isak’s eye-watering fee. Reports suggest Šeško is eager to join the Reds, presenting Liverpool with a realistic and affordable solution.
While the immediate pursuit of Isak appears improbable, Liverpool’s interest highlights their intent to strengthen significantly. The club’s willingness to sound out top talents signals ambition, even if tempered by financial prudence.
Newcastle’s stance makes sense strategically, sending a clear signal of their growing ambitions and determination to maintain key players like Isak. Liverpool, meanwhile, must balance ambition with reality, carefully navigating a market inflated by extravagant valuations.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, Newcastle’s hard-line stance on Alexander Isak is hardly surprising, yet it’s still slightly disappointing. Isak is exactly the calibre of player that excites fans—clinical, fast, and proven in the Premier League. But at £150 million, it feels like Newcastle are pricing him out of any sensible move.
Realistically, Liverpool must prioritise their investments. Florian Wirtz is an exciting prospect, and committing massive funds elsewhere could jeopardise such a critical signing. Benjamin Šeško, meanwhile, is far more aligned with the Reds’ transfer strategy—young, affordable, and bursting with potential. He represents the kind of smart buy Liverpool have excelled at previously.
Although dreaming of Isak at Anfield is appealing, the club’s careful financial approach must prevail. Ensuring a balanced squad capable of challenging across all fronts remains the priority.
