FC Bayern Women have their first chance of 2024/25 to retain the Google Pixel Bundesliga title as they host Freiburg at the FC Bayern Campus for Matchday 20 on Sunday (kick-off: 2pm CEST). Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game in our preview.

Latest news from Bayern

The delight on the faces of Sarah Zadrazil, Giulia Gwinn and the whole squad was clear to see after their impressive 3-0 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt. It was a more than deserved result in front of a crowd of 30,500 at Deutsche Bank Park, with Pernille Harder, Klara Bühl and Lea Schüller getting the goals that cemented Bayern’s position at the top of the table. It was the Munich Frauen’s second win in three competitive meetings with Eintracht this season.

The victory was Bayern’s 10th in a row in the league and took them eight points above second-placed Wolfsburg and nine ahead of Eintracht in third. It means Alexander Straus’s team can now wrap up the club’s seventh league title this weekend.

Opponent: Freiburg

Freiburg have enjoyed a very good campaign this year. With three games to go, Theresa Merk’s side are in fifth place on 34 points. They have caught the eye in particular in recent weeks with some impressive displays, such as last matchday’s 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg, as well as a 3-2 win at home to Frankfurt on Matchday 17.

Bayern have already faced Freiburg twice this season. Both meetings in the Black Forest were close, with the Bundesliga fixture ending in a 2-2 draw and the DFB Cup round of 16 encounter seeing Bayern win 2-1.

Team news

Straus remains without Georgia Stanway (knee ligaments) and most likely also Momoko Tanikawa (ankle). Alara Şehitler is also unlikely to be involved after a knock to her knee against Frankfurt. Lena Oberdorf and Katharina Naschenweng are both working their way back to full fitness and aren’t yet available. Captain Glódis Viggósdóttir has been able to train this week and Straus expects her to be in the squad.

Bayern claimed a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture in Freiburg, coming from 2-0 down thanks to goals from Alara and Weronika Zawistowska.

Pre-match quotes

Alexander Straus: “Freiburg in their current form are capable of causing us difficulties. They have a good team, no pressure and can play freely. But we’ll obviously give our all. The players can sense that we’re close to the title and are highly motivated.”

Carolin Simon: “We’ve seen in this season especially that Freiburg have always made things tough for us. They play in a very brave way and have really developed over the season. Their position in the table is a bit deceptive. We need to have energy from the first minute and show we want to win.”
