Carlo Ancelotti’s side were crowned European champions for a record-extending 14th time at Wembley in June, as late goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior sealed success for the Spaniards.

Dortmund – who top the league phase after two games – will be out for revenge on Tuesday evening, though have had a difficult start to the Bundesliga campaign and sit seventh after seven games. Under the management of novice coach and ex-Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin, this one is full of narrative.

Aston Villa vs Bologna, Champions League (Tuesday)

Two debutants of the Champions League era meet at Villa Park on Tuesday night, as Aston Villa take on fellow surprise package Bologna.

Aston Villa have ended a 41-year absence from Europe’s top club competition in impressive style, taking maximum points from their two games played.

For Bologna, their Champions League qualification brought them back to this level of UEFA competition for the first time since 1964/65.

Each will be keen to enjoy every second.

RB Leipzig vs Liverpool, Champions League (Wednesday)

RB Leipzig host Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, looking to earn their first points of the European season. Only goal difference separates Leipzig from leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table, though the Germans have lost both Champions League games in 2024/25.

Liverpool arrive at the Red Bull Arena as Premier League leaders, while the clash will see Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai return to face their former side.

With Jurgen Klopp also set to take up a role as head of global soccer at Red Bull, there’s plenty of intrigue around this one.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich, Champions League (Wednesday)

Barcelona and Bayern Munich collide in a contest between European football royalty. The newly-launched Champions League format was designed to bring more glamour ties and few get much bigger than this contest between a Spanish superpower and a German giant.

Ex-Bayern boss Hansi Flick will take on his old side, while Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski also faces the team where he scored 344 goals in 375 games.

Barcelona have endured a torrid recent record against Bayern Munich, however, losing 10 of the previous 13 meetings and the last six in succession. That six-game run has seen Bayern rack up an aggregate score of 22-4.

Fenerbahce vs Manchester United, Europa League (Thursday)

The Europa League will also have a sense of friends reunited this week, as Fenerbahce meet Manchester United in Istanbul.

Jose Mourinho will be looking to mastermind a win over his old side, and there’s little doubt the ‘Special One’ will take great satisfaction in doing so.

Mourinho will be able to call on ex-Manchester United midfielders Fred and Sofyan Amrabat, who will be tasked with increasing the pressure on Erik ten Hag. After consecutive draws in Europe, the Red Devils will want to get their season up and running.
