Real Madrid are heading into a presidential election and the registration process for candidacy opened on January 7th.

Florentino Perez, the current president, presented his candidacy yesterday and had it validated by the electoral board.

As it stands, his is the only application received and it is reportedly unlikely that he will face any opposition in his pursuit to continue as the club president.

Unopposed yet again

Real Madrid have touched the stars under Perez’s guidance and his track record at the club makes it pointless for any opposition to stand against him given the overwhelming odds in his favor.

The previous four electoral processes at the club – in 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021 all saw Perez stand as the sole candidate and win the election without any polling required.

This time too, all signs point to the same outcome, given that there have again been no candidates to oppose the current president as relayed by MARCA.

The deadline to present candidacy is currently set to expire on Saturday at 11:59 PM and it remains to be seen if any last-minute surprises pop up.

If there is no other change, Perez will be officially announced as the president of Real Madrid until 2029 next week, in all probability on Tuesday.

The 77-year-old is currently Real Madrid’s most successful president in the history of the club with a staggering 37 titles won during his reign at the top. The next highest, in comparison, was Santiago Bernabeu who won 32.

He first became the president of the club in 2000 but resigned in 2006 after stating that Real Madrid needed a fresh direction. He came back to power, however, in 2009 and has not been challenged ever since.
