Former Bundesliga club on the brink of going out of existence

Some of Germany’s most traditional and famous clubs are often suppressed to the lower divisions of the footballing pyramid. This is partially due to newer clubs with bigger financial support replacing them in the top divisions – some modern examples include RB Leipzig, TSG Hoffenheim, and VfL Wolfsburg.

Now a former Bundesliga club is on the brink of going out of existence all together as KFC Uerdingen files for insolvency.

KFC Uerdingen were once a regular name within the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga throughout the 1980s and 1990s before dropping slightly further down into the third division and beyond.

Now playing in the fourth tier of German football (Regionalliga West), the club can no longer pay its staff or players and looks set to go out of business.

An official announcement was made by the club on Monday evening explaining the situation.

At the start of the campaign, KFC were already €600k in debt. This has since risen to over €1m with the final end-of-season figure set to be around €2.2m – for a club in the 4th tier this is beyond saving.

KFC’s owners have not helped the cause and often clashed with fans and board members.

The most recent drama came after their derby match against MSV Duisburg.

The arrival of their close neighbours saw their highest attendance of the season and earned them over €10k in ticket sales.

However, the money was never actually put into the club and it’s unclear where the money went.

This abuse of funds at the traditional club has been a recurring theme over several years and has finally brought the club to its knees.

Based in the city of Kerfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia, KFC used to enjoy regular derby matches against MSV Duisburg, Schalke 04, and Dortmund to name but a few.

However, it now looks set to potentially close its doors for the last time.
