Grant begins Huddersfield chapter after Ipswich promotion triumph

Huddersfield Town have confirmed the appointment of Lee Grant as Head Coach on a three-year contract. The 42-year-old arrives in West Yorkshire following a successful spell as Assistant Coach at Ipswich Town, where he was part of a backroom staff that delivered back-to-back promotions, culminating in Premier League football.

This marks Grant’s first senior managerial role, with the club securing his services ahead of the 2025/26 Sky Bet League One campaign. The agreement was finalised after Huddersfield reached a compensation settlement with Ipswich, enabling him to take up the position immediately following the close of the 2024/25 season.

Coaching pedigree shaped by elite mentors

Grant’s coaching journey has been shaped by time spent under some of the game’s most respected minds. During a playing career that spanned over two decades and 500 professional appearances, Grant absorbed lessons from figures such as Jose Mourinho, Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe, and Kieran McKenna. His time as a goalkeeper concluded at Manchester United, where he transitioned into coaching duties alongside his role in the squad.

His transition into coaching was deliberate and methodical. The Football Association reportedly endorsed Grant strongly during Huddersfield’s search process, citing his performance during the coaching qualification stages as particularly impressive.

Ipswich success showcases attacking acumen

Following his retirement in 2022, Grant reunited with McKenna at Ipswich Town as Assistant Coach. Over two seasons, the pair oversaw a remarkable ascent from League One to the Premier League. Known for his detailed work on attacking patterns, Grant’s influence was evident in Ipswich’s goal tallies — 101 goals in their 2022/23 League One promotion campaign, followed by 92 goals en route to Championship success the following season.

McKenna offered his full backing to Grant’s next chapter, saying: “We wish Lee the very best with the next step in his career. Lee has been a big part of our success in recent seasons and has developed fantastically as a coach during his time here. He deserves this managerial opportunity at Huddersfield.”

Vision and support from Huddersfield hierarchy

Huddersfield Town Chairman Kevin Nagle also offered his endorsement, highlighting Grant’s potential and readiness to lead: “We are delighted to confirm that Lee Grant has today been appointed Manager of Huddersfield Town, joining the Club on a three-year contract ahead of the 2025/26 Sky Bet League One season.”

Grant’s coaching team will be announced in due course, with the club keen to support him in establishing a new direction as they look to bounce back into the Championship.

With a new era beginning and a fresh philosophy being embedded, the appointment signals a bold statement from Huddersfield Town. In Lee Grant, they have secured a young, hungry coach with elite-level grounding and a clear attacking identity — a combination that could be pivotal in reshaping the club’s fortunes.
