Barcelona are keeping a close watch as the winter transfer window approaches its conclusion on Monday, 3 February.

According to SPORT, while the club is not expected to secure a major signing, there is potential to benefit financially from a deal involving La Masia graduate Nico Gonzalez, who currently plays for Porto.

Reports suggest that Manchester City, Porto, and Nico’s representatives have been in contact over the weekend to explore the possibility of a transfer.

Pep Guardiola’s side is dealing with the significant setback of midfielder Rodri’s injury, which has left a noticeable gap in their midfield.

The Premier League champions are eager to strengthen their squad as they aim to regain momentum domestically and prepare for a crucial Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Financial gain for Barcelona

Nico, who shares a similar playing style with his compatriot Rodri, has emerged as a potential solution for City.

His ability to control the midfield and contribute defensively makes him an appealing option not only for the immediate situation but also for the future.

Barcelona stand to gain from this potential transfer. The Catalan club retained a percentage of Nico’s transfer rights when they sold him to Porto for €8.5 million.

If the deal goes through, with Manchester City looking to negotiate a fee of around €40 million, Barcelona could pocket approximately €16 million from the transaction.

FC Porto are now flexible

The proposed transfer fee is below Nico’s release clause of €60 million, but Porto appear open to discussions.

The player is reportedly keen to make the move to Manchester and work under Guardiola, recognising the opportunity to compete at the highest level in European football.

Should the deal materialise, it would provide a financial boost to Barcelona while also giving Nico the chance to further develop his career at one of the most successful clubs in the world.

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether this transfer becomes a reality.
