As the Champions League semi-final between Inter Milan and Barcelona approaches, former Real Madrid and Italy coach Fabio Capello has offered his tactical insights in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The legendary coach dissected Hansi Flick’s version of Barcelona and explained how Simone Inzaghi’s side Inter hurt them, while also giving his opinion on Lamine Yamal.
Capello addressed the hype around teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who has enjoyed a stunning season thus far, leading to comparisons with the legendary Lionel Messi.
In a recent interview, Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni himself pointed out the teenager as a threat.
However, Capello was quick to dismiss the Lamine-Messi comparisons while stating that the Nerazzurri have what it takes to stop the 17-year-old gem.
“I see people comparing him to Messi, but those comparisons are premature. Yamal has talent and humility, but Leo was an alien already at 16,” said Capello.
“Stopping Lamine will not be easy, but if the Inter of the treble era did it with Messi, it is possible now too.”

Analysing Barcelona’s style of play under Hansi Flick and their intense pressing and high-line system, Capello added:
“Barcelona have quality—individually and technically—but they are a different team now compared to the past.
“Flick has brought a more vertical, less typically Spanish style, and demands intense pressing immediately after losing the ball. That is their strength – but also their weakness.”
According to the former Real Madrid boss, “The key will be breaking through the first line of pressure.
“If Lautaro and Thuram can break free at speed, they will find space to do damage. And if Barça fail to win the ball back quickly, their attack becomes far less dangerous.”
Capello also stated that he believes the draw could benefit Inter who are scheduled to play the second leg at home.
“Playing the first leg away can be an advantage. It gives you more mental freedom to approach the match and then decide everything at San Siro. The Inter fans can become an extra force at the key moments,” Capello admitted.
“Inter have the tools to hurt Barça,” he concluded, “but they will need courage, focus, and, above all, the right composure when it matters most.”
