Sport Bild (via @Bayer04Xtra) have revealed some of the details behind Florian Wirtz’s Bayer Leverkusen contract extension as the final details still need to be clarified.
Last night, it was revealed that Wirtz is nearing an extension at the BayArena. The extension will be until 2028, his current deal will expire in 2027. The 21-year-old will also receive a pay rise which will take his salary to more than €10m per year, his current salary is €8m per year.
The biggest talking point is the value of the release clause in his contract. There will be a clause in the deal that is valid from 2026 and will be worth €125m.
Although it is unlikely, if Wirtz does not extend his contract at Leverkusen, die Werkself will push to sell him for €150m in the summer. Leverkusen have made it clear they do not want to be put under pressure in the final two years of his deal, and this has been agreed with Wirtz’s camp.
There are several clubs still interested in Wirtz. Manchester City reportedly tried to sign the 21-year-old in January (very ambitious to think Leverkusen would sell their best player in January) as the replacement for Kevin de Bruyne and Pep Guardiola still has an interest in bringing him to England. Real Madrid also sees Wirtz as a potential replacement for Luka Modric and he could move with head coach Xabi Alonso to Spain in the summer of 2026.
Finally, Bayern Munich are widely interested in Wirtz, however, Leverkusen know that Bayern lack the money to sign Wirtz in the summer and will try to save and attempt to sign him in 2026. The recent comments by Bayern officials suggest that Wirtz is a bigger topic at Bayern than Bayern is to him.
