Gianfranco Zola labelled Enzo Maresca as “brave” for replacing Robert Sanchez with Filip Jorgensen for the win against West Ham on Monday night.

The Blues returned to winning ways as they came from behind to record a vital 2-1 win against the Hammers thanks to Pedro Neto and an own goal from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The win moved Chelsea back into the top four and two points ahead of Manchester City and Newcastle in the race for Champions League qualification.

Zola labels Maresca brave for Jorgensen decision

All the talk heading into the game was whether Maresca would finally drop Sanchez after the Spaniard made yet another error against Manchester City, with supporters booing him.

The Italian took the decision to go with Jorgensen, who started just his third league game of the season and the Dane didn’t perform badly.

There was little he could do about Jarrod Bowen’s opener, following a huge mistake by Levi Colwill, but he was otherwise a safe pair of hands.

Chelsea are believed to have high hopes for Jorgensen, who joined from Villarreal in summer for £20.7m and it will be interesting to see how long he keeps the number one shirt for.

To most it won’t have seemed like a difficult decision to make, but club legend Zola labelled Maresca as “brave” for making the switch between the sticks.

“He [Maresca] has been brave changing the goalkeeper,” he said as cited on X.com.

“I think Maresca is making the decisions that need to be made. Things are going in the right direction. You can’t always play perfect football.

“Sometimes in games like this, in tough moments, you need to get something out of it and I think they will get a lot of confidence out of this.”

Next up for Chelsea is a trip to Brighton in the FA Cup and it will be interesting to see who plays in goal as Jorgensen has been the cup keeper this season.
