Roma defender Gianluca Mancini spoke to Sky Sport after Roma’s exit from Europa League at the hands of Athletic Club Bilbao.
“The red card on Hummels? These are episodes that are part of football. Watching it again, it wasn’t really a last man foul, Evan was there too. I’m very close but the referee made this decision.”
‘The referee told me that he was running towards the goal and that I had no margin for recovery and that if Hummels hadn’t committed the foul he could have served the other player.”
“But in football they teach us that there is always margin for recovery and I tried to tell him that if he hadn’t touched the ball it would have been yellow but he made this decision and changed the outcome of the match a little.”
“They were one ahead but we deserved more. But obviously with ifs and buts you don’t get very far and I didn’t see our inferiority. I have to congratulate all the boys because we fought until our legs gave out.”
“Until the end to try to bring it to our side, but that’s how it went. I’m proud of how we helped each other, in telling each other positive things. But we weren’t inferior to Bilbao.”
