Eintracht fans have chosen the 32-year-old as the Mainova Player of the Month ahead of Hugo Ekitiké, Kaua Santos and Michy Batshuayi.
At the end of March, after Mario Götze had scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 home win over VfB Stuttgart, Sky expert Lothar Matthäus compared the 32-year-old midfield supremo to a fine wine, saying that “red wine always gets better with age”. High praise indeed, from one World Cup winner to another, with head coach Dino Toppmöller adding that Götze always brings “so much” to the team, both in attack and in defence.
When asked to vote via the mainaqila app, no fewer than 57 per cent of Eintracht fans opted for Götze – an impressive score for Frankfurt’s number 27, who was up against stiff competition in Hugo Ekitiké, Michy Batshuayi and Kaua Santos.
Götze played a total of 460 minutes throughout the month, across four Bundesliga matchdays and the UEFA Europa League round of 16 games against Ajax. He was the lynch pin of the team in the Stuttgart game, as well as playing the full 90 minutes against Leverkusen and another 80 in the win away at Bochum, completing over 80 per cent of his passes during the period. Against Ajax, he took his game to another level, registering one assist and scoring two wonderful goals to help the team reach the quarter-finals, which begin away to Tottenham this Thursday.
