Manchester United could miss out on one of their most coveted summer transfer targets.
With their eyes set on strengthening their attack, Sporting CP’s star striker Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as the top priority on their radar.
The Sweden international has flourished and become a key figure under the guidance of head coach Ruben Amorim.
According to The Athletic, ‘it is considered unlikely that Gyokeres follows Amorim to Old Trafford’.
Gyokeres ‘wants to join a Champions League team’.
United look set for a mid-table finish in the Premier League, leaving their hopes of qualifying for elite European competition hinging on the Europa League triumph.
The report further reveals that ‘United would be reluctant to commit that type of money to a player who will turn 27 in June.
The club’s strategy is to invest in younger signings’.
This revelation is sure to infuriate a large portion of United supporters, who had eagerly hoped the club would make a bold move for Gyokeres.
The Red Devils have not had a reliable number nine for a few years now.
They signed Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
Despite splashing an eye-watering £108.5 million to secure both players, neither has managed to live up to expectations.
United have focussed on recruiting young players.
Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte were signed – all aged 25 or under.
The strategy revolves around maximising the prime years of these players while ensuring they have strong resale value down the line.
However, United need a centre-forward who is in his prime.
There is no denying that Hojlund has the potential to be a future superstar, but right now, United need someone who can deliver immediately.
Gyokeres is in unstoppable form this season, with a stunning 34 goals and seven assists to his name, making him one of the most lethal strikers around.
Sporting will be open to sanctioning his exit for a fee around £58m and United must not let this opportunity slip to bring their dream striker to the Theatre of Dreams.
