How one Premier League club has reacted to the news that their manager is open to succeeding Erik ten Hag | OneFootball

After INEOS executives missed out on their first-choice managerial candidate, Thomas Tuchel, they’ve had to go back to the drawing board to consider their remaining options.

In truth, it’s not looking positive on the market, which means they may be forced to approach coaches who are already tied to their respective clubs in hopes of swaying them towards Old Trafford. That’s worked at board level, with Omar Berrada joining from Manchester City and Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United, but it remains to be seen if their negotiation tactics will work when it comes to the manager.

Tuchel’s appointment yesterday confirmed that he would become England’s third foreign coach, following in the footsteps of the late Sven-Goran Eriksson (Swedish) and Fabio Capello (Italian). It’s believed that the FA’s ideal English Gareth Southgate successor was Eddie Howe, given the reputation he’s built since his impressive Bournemouth tenure, though nothing came to fruition between the parties.

Howe being eventually overlooked for the vacancy may well have caught the attention of United’s key decision makers, who are reportedly giving Ten Hag another two matches to have his side looking like a coherent team – or risk getting the axe. Some sources have gone as far as to label the Dutchman’s sacking as ‘inevitable’.

According to TeamTalk, Howe would give ‘serious consideration’ to taking over the 20-time champions if they make their interest known. He led the Magpies back to the European stage for the first time in 20 years when finishing fourth-placed in 2022/2023, though did suffer an injury-plagued 2023/2024 term, where they eventually placed seventh.

The Tyneside outfit currently sit seven places above the 14th-placed Reds, having claimed four more points from the opening seven matches.

Newcastle are thought to be calm about the situation and remain confident that they will continue with the 46-year-old at the helm long-term.
