Frank Lampard must use his first transfer window at Coventry City wisely, with the Sky Blues still sitting uncomfortably in the bottom half of the Championship table.

The Midlands outfit have struggled for consistency in the second tier this season after a couple of years of knocking on the door of promotion to the Premier League.

Chelsea and England legend Lampard replaced long-serving Mark Robins as manager back in November, but has failed to find a real run of form as their results have remained inconsistent.

Lampard now has the opportunity to make his first signings as Coventry boss during this January transfer window, but he also must make some big decisions regarding his current squad.

Centre-back Liam Kitching, who has barely featured under Lampard, is currently attracting interest from elsewhere in the Championship, and it could be the perfect time to cash in on him.

Blackburn Rovers hold talks with Coventry over the potential signing of Liam Kitching

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Blackburn have identified Coventry's Kitching as a target and are in talks with the Sky Blues over securing a deal for the defender.

John Eustace is evidently looking to bolster his defensive options, and has turned his attention to the Coventry man as they push for a place in the Championship play-offs.

Coventry initially signed Kitching for around £4 million in the summer of 2023 from Barnsley, but it is highly unlikely they will get anywhere close to their money back given his game time as declined with the Sky Blues.

A deal does hang in the balance however with Blackburn after talks stalled, but all parties may be keen to get something over the line.

Coventry City may be wise to cash in on Liam Kitching in January

FLW spoke to their Sky Blues fan pundit, Ryan Murphy, who suggested that perhaps it is time to cash in on the defender, as long as they can find a replacement.

"It's an interesting one because he hasn't really played under Lampard until the last game," Ryan told Football League World.

He didn't do too badly to be fair, but for whatever reason, he just hasn't been able to keep a place here at Coventry since he's been here.

"He's had a couple of red cards, scored an own goal, it's not all been pretty, but he has had the odd good game. There is a player there that can play well, but he's inconsistent like the rest of the squad.

"We do need changes of personnel. Maybe it will do him good and the club good if he got a move.

"Now, a loan deal, I don't see where that benefits us too much, unless we've got a like-for-like replacement coming in as we can't be losing too many bodies.

"If we could recoup anything near to what we paid for him, I'd sell. We don't want to make a huge loss, but his value must be decreasing by the day.

"Ideally, if he is to go, it would be a permanent transfer for me, if the price is right, whereas I can't see how we're going to recoup anything near to what we paid for him.

"If we're going to take a big hit, maybe we're better off keeping him in the building and giving him a run in the team to see if he can kick on.

"Who knows what Frank Lampard's plans are for him? If he's not in his plans at all, maybe we're better to do some wheeling and dealing if we can get someone in for the money we recoup from Kitching."
