Simone Inzaghi has not denied the fact that the ball was out of play when Inter were awarded a corner which led to their opening goal in their 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Monday night, but he feels that La Viola should have ‘never’ been given a penalty for a handball by Matteo Darmian.

Inter rose to a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in San Siro on Monday night after an own goal from Marin Pongracic, an equaliser from the penalty spot from Rolando Mandragora and an early second-half winner from Marko Arnautovic.

Inzaghi: ‘The ball was out, but VAR cannot intervene’

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Inzaghi did not deny the fact that Inter were fortunate to be awarded a corner kick in the build-up to their opening goal. Images show that the full ball had crossed the line in the build-up, and should have been a goal kick.

“Fiorentina were angry, as they should be, as I was in Leverkusen when we conceded from a corner kick that came about after an offside” Inzaghi said, reported via TMW.

“I didn’t understand what had happened, there was a moment of tension. I’ve also watched the penalty back, and it should have never been given. VAR also didn’t intervene in the derby, and we would have won that game.

“I understand Palladino, the ball was out, but the VAR cannot intervene. Then again, the penalty against Darmian was one and a half metres away from him, but VAR intervened on a penalty that, for me, shouldn’t have been given.”
