Jan Molby Discusses Right-Back Options and Frimpong Link for Liverpool

Jan Molby didn’t mince his words on the latest episode of Molby On The Spot when Trev Downey pressed him on where Liverpool’s summer rebuild should begin. The former Reds midfielder was crystal clear: “I just can’t see Liverpool going into the next season with Connor Bradley and Joe Gomez as the two options at right back.”
This is where Jeremie Frimpong’s name has emerged in connection with Liverpool. However, Molby poured cold water on the noise, describing the heavily-rumoured move for the Bayer Leverkusen star as “a little strange.”
“To me, he looks like a marauding full-back that struggles to defend and won’t win you many headers,” Molby said of Frimpong, adding, “He’s got unbelievable pace, and then people go ‘Yeah, but he can also play further forward in Mo’s role’. He can—but as long as Mo’s there, nobody plays in that role, do they?”
That blunt evaluation echoes wider concerns about squad balance versus headline-grabbing signings. It’s not a lack of admiration for Frimpong’s talent, but a question of fit—particularly when the squad already contains versatile full-backs and only one right-flank starting spot up for grabs.
While the right-back question got top billing, the centre-back situation is less defined. Trev Downey raised the possibility of incomings at centre-half, to which Molby replied, “The one I can’t quite get a read on is Quansah.”

He referenced reports of Newcastle’s interest in the young defender and suggested Liverpool’s refusal to sell might indicate that Arne Slot “is thinking there’s a future in him.”
With question marks around Joe Gomez’s role, the decision on Quansah could be pivotal. “So we might not be desperate for a centre-half,” Molby added, pointing to the manager’s yet-to-be-seen hierarchy.
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new left-back appears to centre on Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, a player the Reds have been repeatedly linked with. But Molby revealed a new detail that casts doubt on its inevitability.
“I was told at Anfield on Sunday… 45 million for a left-back,” he said, sounding surprised. “When have we ever spent that type of money on defenders?”
That figure raised eyebrows, even if Kerkez looks like an ideal fit for Slot’s system. The price tag may dictate whether Liverpool act or wait.
As speculation swirls about Jeremie Frimpong joining Liverpool, Jan Molby’s analysis offers a measured alternative to the transfer frenzy. While acknowledging the need for a right-back, he questioned the logic of chasing a player “who struggles to defend” for a side that has to shore up structurally, not just stylistically.
